Hundreds of Law Enforcement Positions on the Way for Military Veterans

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing (COPS office) announced the 2012 COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant recipients. This year, approximately $111 million in grant funding is awarded to more than 200 law enforcement agencies to create or save 800 positions nationwide. Unique to this year’s program is the requirement that all officers hired using grant funds be recent military veterans who have served at least 180 days since September 11, 2001.

The largest awards were received by the City of Los Angeles Police Department ($6.5 million) to hire or rehire 25 officers, and the City of Tacoma Police Department ($4.9 million) to hire or rehire 15 officers.

COPS Hiring Grants go directly to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to help them increase community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.  Officers and deputies hired through the program are dedicated to addressing specific crime and disorder challenges confronting their communities.  The 2012 CHP grants provide 75 percent of the approved entry-level salaries and fringe benefits of each newly hired and/or rehired full-time officer, up to $125,000 per officer position, over the three year (36 month) grant period.
